- Extracting Iron
- Ore is haematite
- Reducing Iron Ore
- Hot air is blasted in and the temperature raised to about 1500 degrees
- Coke burns and produces carbon dioxide C + O2 --> CO2
- CO2 reacts with coke to form CO CO2 + C --> 2CO
- CO then reduces iron oxide to iron 3CO + Fe2O3 --> 3CO2 + 2Fe
- Iron is molten - runs to the bottom and is tapped off
- Limestone removes impurity CaCO3 --> CaO + CO2
- CaO reacts with silicon dioxide to from **** CaO + SiO2 --> CaSiO3
- **** is used for Road building and Fertiliser

- Uses
- Wrought Iron - ornamental gates
- Alloys
- Stainless Steel - cutlery (Iron and chromium)
- Steel - Car Bodies (Iron and carbon)
- Cast iron - cooking pans (Iron, carbon and silicon)
