  • Extracting Iron
    • Ore is haematite
    • Reducing Iron Ore
      • Hot air is blasted in and the temperature raised to about 1500 degrees
        • Coke burns and produces carbon dioxide C + O2 --> CO2
          • CO2 reacts with coke to form CO CO2 + C --> 2CO
            • CO then reduces iron oxide to iron 3CO + Fe2O3 --> 3CO2 + 2Fe
              • Iron is molten - runs to the bottom and is tapped off
                • Limestone removes impurity CaCO3 --> CaO + CO2
                  • CaO reacts with silicon dioxide to from **** CaO + SiO2 --> CaSiO3
                    • **** is used for Road building and Fertiliser
    • Uses
      • Wrought Iron - ornamental gates
      • Alloys
        • Stainless Steel - cutlery (Iron and chromium)
        • Steel - Car Bodies (Iron and carbon)
        • Cast iron - cooking pans (Iron, carbon and silicon)
