Extraction of Iron

How is the iron extracted?

Iron is extracted from haematite inside a BLAST FURNACE.

It needs 3 raw materials which are ; Iron ore, Coal and Limestone.

Stages involved:

1. The mixture is fed into the furnace and hot air is blown into the bottom of the furnace. This hot air causes the coke(carbon) to burn, producing carbon dioxide and heat.

2. The carbon dioxide the rises up the furnace. As it does so, it is reduced by hot carbon to carbon monoxide.
