- Norfolk arrested in oct 1569 and put in prison
- Earl of Sussex was a good friend to Norfolk & wanted to show his loyalty to Elizabeth - had Northumberland & Westmoreland interrogated by council of the north
- Elizabeth not convinced by their loyalty - called to London
- Fear of Punishment
- Westmorelands &Northumberland into rebellion - coupled with the news Elizabeth possibly getting excommunicated
- Led to anti-protestant feeling in the North
- The rebellion began 9th November 1569 based in Durham
- Rebels made it clear they weren't rebelling against Elizabeth but against her advisors (Cecil)
- Capture & Siege of Durham 1569
- Rebels captured the city of Durham in mid Nov - held catholic madd in cathedral & destroyed protestant symbols
- Dec 1569 - rebels besiege Barnard Castle which is where crown supporters were
- 14th Dec 1569 - 5000 rebel forced people in castle to surrender the commander - George Bowes
- Rebels preferred destroying symbols of protestantism rather than murdering people
- Aftermath of Durham
- Planned to march south & liberate Mary but Sussex raised a royal army of 7000
- Rebels dispersed and the rebellion dissolved
- Early 1570 Lord Dacre got a large rebel force but was defeated by lord Hundons forces
