  • Esters
    • Formed by reacting an alcohol with a carboxylic acid
    • Producing esters
      • Using Alcohols and carboxylic acid
        • - Heat with a strong acid catalyst               - It's called an esterification reaction.                 - Produce an ester and water
      • Using alcohols and acid anhydride
        • Acid anhydride (AA)  =  2 identical carboxylic acid molecule
        • - AA Warmed with alcohol.             - produces an ester and a carboxylic acid.                                   - They can be separated by distillation.
    • Hydrolysis
      • Acid hydrolysis
        • - splits the ester into an alcohol and a carboxylic acid
        • - Heat the ester under reflux with dilute acid
      • Base hydrolysis
        • - Reflux  the ester with dilute alkali.             - Produces  carboxylate salt and an alcohol
