- Benzodiazepines
- E.g. Valium and Librium
- Works by reducing brain activity
- Enhances the effects of Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This slows down neurons in the brain
- Evaluation
- +ve: Effective at treating symptoms
- +ve: relatively safe in overdose
- +ve: easy to obtain with a prescription
- -ve: side effect, e.g. sedation, memory issue, motor control problems
- -ve: can lead to depedence
- -ve: doesn't treat source of stress
- Beta-Blockers
- E.g. Inderal and Aknond
- Doesn't enter brain
- Reduces the action of adrenaline and noradrenaline
- Results in fall in blood pressure & heart rate - less stress of the heart
- Evaluation
- +ve: acts directly & fast - has a life saving function
- +ve: can interact with other drug treatments
- +ve: doesn't have severe side effects
- -ve: doesn't target source of stress
- Affects the Sympatho-Medulary pathway
