  • Does Aristotle's VE provide a plausible account of morality? (25marks)
    • Intro: YES. because CV misunderstands, GOHTA can be solved by practical wisdom/DotMand the most significant that ultimately fails is the PoC. Can be overcome as the 2nd definition has been oversimplified.
    • Paragraph 1 (all AO1)
      • VT stems from the belief that we should all aspire to be virtuous and reach eudaimonia
      • It doesn't aim to tell you what to do or how to act, instead it is all about character.
      • It is an ethical theory that puts emphasis on an individuals character rather than following a set of rules.
    • Paragraph 2 (HARE)
      • H: A minor criticism of VE that can be easily overcome is CV.
      • A: All virtues cannot be used in conjunction with one another.
      • R: Not an issue for VE because virtuous people have PW so they always know which virtue takes precedence.
      • E: This is no issue. The argument is weak and fails because it misunderstands how virtues work.
    • Paragraph 3 (HARE)
      • H: Although it eventually fails, the most significant criticism of VE is the PoC.
      • A: The two definitions of virtue are circular: 1. An act is virtuous if if is an act that would be done by a VP. 2. A VP is a person disposed to do VA.
      • R: A VP just disposed to do VA. V's are traits of character, emotions and pleasure.
      • E: This fails to disproves A's VE because it oversimplifies the second definition.
    • Paragraph 4 (HARE) if there is time
      • H: Criticism raised by Rachel's claims that VE provides no GOHTA.
      • A: Virtues themselves aren't enough to help you make decisions on how to act.
      • R: Weak because VP always know how to act in every situation. They don't require rules or guidance.
      • E: There is no substance to this criticism.
    • Conc: Due to the failure of  PoC which is the strongest and most significant criticism, there is no substance to the claim that VE is not a plausible framework for morality.
  • POC: An act is V if it is an act that would be done by s VP who is disposed to do VA.
  • CV:"It only leaves you wondering which virtue takes precedence"
  • GOHTA: "It is not obvious how we should go about deciding what to do.
