- DNA
- What is DNA?
- In chromosomes in the nucleus - contains genetic information
- In all living organisms - main part of the cell (controls it)
- Deoxyribonucleic Acid
- Fundamental and distinctive character
- Unchangeable
- Share half of our parent's DNA
- Unchangeable
- In chromosomes in the nucleus - contains genetic information
- Human Genome Project
- Genetic information = Genome
- HGP (Human Genome Project)
- Started: late 1990s Ended: 2001
- Very Ambitious because they had several aims that they wanted to cover
- Identify all genes
- Faster Methods of sequencing DNA
- Work out sequence / order of the 3 billion base pairs in the human genome
- Wanted to take several people to find an average for Genome / DNA structure but no one has the same structure, unless they are identical twins
- Statistics
- f you put all the DNA molecules in your body end to end, the DNA would reach from the Earth to the Sun and back over 600 times .
- Friedrich Miescher discovered DNA in 1869, although scientists did not understand DNA was the genetic material in cells until 1943. Prior to that time, it was widely believed that proteins stored genetic information.
