        • when a person are baptised = they have been filled with the light of christ

    • The Last Judgement - PAINTING
      • Christ in centre = importance = Christ of all

      • angel carved on them = people have their own guardian angel who looks after them

      • sarcophagi = decorated coffins made for wealthy christians in the past - shows belief in Jesus
      • in the middle ages - monuments decorated with skeletons + other symbols of decay = reflects belief that everyone is equal
    • Remembrance Gardens
      • outside area where the ashes of cremated bodies can be kept
      • area of peace + beauty = reflects peace + beauty of heaven
      • quiet reflective spaces = helps ppl to mourn their loved ones in a place where they can feel close as their body remains at rest
    • Eschatology + Resurrection
      • end of time will be signalled by cosmic disasters e.g. stars falling from heaven
      • after the end of time...
        • the reign of God will be established
        • the end of the current world order will lead to the creation of a new one
        • the son of man will come to judge the whole of  creation
      • Christinas believe the afterlife + end of time is based on Jesus resurrection
      • Jesus resurrection taught us that life continues after death in the presence of God
      • beliefs about the resurrection + end of time have changed over years
        • Early beliefs = end of world will happen soon + all ppl would be resurrected + taken up to the presence of God
        • now, christians realised they must live in the life of resurrection on earth by following Jesus teaching + resisting sin = preparing for judgement day
    • St Pauls letter on Resurrection
      • he compares the relationship between the earthly body + the resurrected body to that of a seed + plant that grows with it
        • "it is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body"
      • he compares the Spiritual + Physical body of christians BUT shows how there are both similarities + differences
        • "it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power"

      • helps give idea of what resurrected body is life
      • tells Jesus was resurrected in physical body - not limited by physical barriers BUT fully present + untouchable
    • The 4 Last Things
      • Death
        • Transition  to a new phase of life
        • Not to be feared - start of eternal life, no limitations
        • body dies but soul lives + is judged by God
      • Judgement
        • will be done after death
        • God considers what a person has done = moment of truth - accept responsibility of actions
        • even though  God judges them, they will judge themselves in the light of his love
      • Hell
        • placed there if judged unfaithfully
        • eternal separation from God
        • people send themselves to hell by not accepting God
        • state of frustration + anger
      • Heaven
        • state of eternal happiness with God
        • God's love removes cares + worries
        • ppl have to accept God to go to Heaven
    • Purgatory
      • many ppl are judged b4 God + want to accept the offer of heaven
      • presence + overwhelming love of God makes ppl ashamed of the bad things they've done = want to make up for what they've done
      • as God forgave their sins, they go to purgatory = cleansing process
      • the effects of sin = removed = person feels happy in the presence of God
      • can be quickened with help of prayer from those alive
      • some christians don't believe in purgatory
    • Particular judgement
      • happens immediately after death
      • God judges someone on a personal, individual basis
      • person = judged on actions in life
      • person goes to Heaven, Hell or Purgatory
      • some believe it doesn't happen straight after death but wait for final judgement
    • Final judgement
      • happens at the end of time
      • christ will come in glory + judge whole of creation
      • After this happens Reign of God = established + everything made perfect
      • those judged favourably by god will stay with him in perfect creation
    • Cosmic reconciliation
      • God father created universe through Gods son = harmony made in creation
      • sin broke harmony throwing of balance
      • Jesus destroyed power of sin + death = helps to restore harmony
      • whole harming will be restored at end of time
      • at this time cosmos (universe) will be reconciled with God
    • Julian of Norwich
      • Medical writer
      • received visions from Jesus
      • In one vision, Jesus said: "it was necessary that there should be sin but all shall be well"
        • reflects belief that sin is necessary (free will)
        • sin wil be defeated and all will be made perfect in time
    • Preparing for the end of time
      • christ will come in glory so catholics must live in this hope on earth
      • no-one is predestined to god to heaven or hell so ppl have free will to accept God
      • catholics determined what happen to them through their actions
      • no one knows when it will happen so catholics must follow teachings in preparation + be "constantly vigilant" - Lumen gentium
      • you have to keep "faith"
      • perform good deeds and actions
      • do not commit mortal sins = "turning away from God" - catechism
    • The funeral rite
      • Reception of the body
        • taken to church in coffin = being taken back to God
        • coffin = sprinkled with holy water + joined in christ resurrection
        • coffin = placed beside lit paschal candle = lit of risen christ shining on them
      • The funeral Mass
        • the priest holds mass called "Requiem"= resting in the presence of God
        • readings focus on the effects of Christ resurrections "everyone who lives + believes in me will never die"
          • reflects belief that christ made life after death possible
      • The Committal+ burial or cremation
        • holy water = baptism
        • priest waves smoke from burning incense - rising smoke represents  ppls prayers
        • coffin is blessed -"may the angels lead you to paradise" = hope of heaven eternity
        • prayer is said - reflects hope they will meet the dead again
        • at burial lords prayer is said = refects belief that decseased was a child of god who has been retired to his love + care
    • Care of the Dying
      • all human life is holy + sacred
      • all life should be respected + value
      • all life doesn't become less valued when u die
      • all life belongs to God = if they damage a life, they reject a gift of God
      • ppl have a duty to give the ill + elderly care so can maintain dignity till they dies
    • Why is the catholic church against Euthanasia
      • only God has the right to take away a life
      • considered morally unacceptable
      • suffering can be seen as a way to share in Jesus' pain of cross
      • suffering is part of human life + can be reduced with medication
      • it lowers the value + dignity of life, all life should be valued even during suffering
      • 'we, without hastening the hour of death, should be able to accept... dignity'
      • a persons life shouldn't be prolonged by treatments
