  • carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
    • plants and oceans are often referred to as carbon dioxide "sinks" as they adsorb excess CO2 and release when its in short supply
    • the changing balance
      • over the recent past there has been a great increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
        • The main cause of this is the amount of fossil fuels we burn to power our cars, heat our homes and make electricity
      • with carbon levels rising the amount the sea takes in also rises but now we are seeing signs that the sea can no longer withstand the levels of CO2
        • one example is that many coral reefs are now dieing because of the acidic conditions caused by this
    • carbon moves in and out of the atmosphere due to rocks, plants, animals and oceans
