The Atmosphere

Then:

  • 90% carbon dioxide
  • 10% water vapour and other gases
  • Volcanic activity produced carbon dioxide = atmosphere
  • Volcanic activity produced water vapour = oceans

Now:

  • 78% nitrogen
  • 21% oxygen
  • 1% carbon dioxide and other gases
  • Carbon dioxide dissolved into oceans
  • This dissolved further into marine organisms = carbonate rocks
  • Primitive green plants photosynthesised = oxygen

Changes:

  • Volcanic activity = sulphur dioxide
  • Lightening = nitrous oxide
  • Burning Fossil Fuels = carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide
  • Deforestation = less resources to remove carbon dioxide via photosynthesis
  • Farming = methane
