C1.7.6

?
How has the carbon dioxide been since the atmosphere was formed?
For about 200 million years the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has remained about the same because various natural processes that move carbon dioxide into and out of the atmosphere had achieved a balance.
1 of 5
What do the natural processes that move carbon dioxide into and out of the atmosphere involve?
These processes involve carbon compounds in plants, animals, the ocean and rocks. The organic carbon cycle shows some of these processes.
2 of 5
What is important in maintaining a balance?
Carbon dioxide dissolves in water, particularly the oceans, and reactions of inorganic carbonate compounds are also important in maintaining a balance.
3 of 5
Name two processes that release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and two processes that remove it from the atmosphere.
Release, two from: burning, respiration, decay; remove: photosynthesis, dissolve in oceans/water.
4 of 5
Which human activity has been the main cause of increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere?
Burning fossil fuels.
