- Carbon Dioxide
- Dilute acid and Calcium Carbonate
- Calcium Carbonate (marble chips) put in a flask and HCl is added
- HCl reacts with calcium carbonate to produce calcium chloride, water and carbon dioxide
- 2HCl + CaCO3 --> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2
- CO2 is collected in a gas syringe using downward delivery
- HCl reacts with calcium carbonate to produce calcium chloride, water and carbon dioxide
- Calcium Carbonate (marble chips) put in a flask and HCl is added
- Thermal Decomposition
- Heat a metal carbonate
- Copper (II)Carbonate is a green powder that will thermally decompose to carbon dioxide and copper (II) oxide
- CuCO3 --> CuO + CO2
- Fizzy Drinks and Fire Extinguishers
- Fizzy drinks use CO2 so they can fizz. CO2 slightly soluble so dissolves in water when under pressure to form carbonic acid
- CO2 + H2O --> H2CO3
- Fire Extinguishers use CO2 as it is more dense than air so sinks onto the flame stopping oxygen getting to it
- Only used when water extinguishers are not safe
- Fizzy drinks use CO2 so they can fizz. CO2 slightly soluble so dissolves in water when under pressure to form carbonic acid
- Greenhouse Gas and Links with Climate Change
- The more CO2 in the atmosphere the more heat gets radiated back to earth
- Deforestation leads to less CO2 being removed from the atmosphere
- carbon that was 'locked up' in fossil fuels are now being released
- the extra carbon dioxide in the air has lead to an increase in the earths temperature
- Dilute acid and Calcium Carbonate
