  • C1.1 Atoms
    • Element
      • A group of singular molecules
      • A pure substance
        • Made from one type of atom
      • Each element has a symbol
      • A chemical element is a species of atoms having the same number of protons in their atomic nuclei.
      • Can be found as a metal/non-metal or gas
        • Can appear as a solid/liquid/ gas for example Gold, water and nitrogen
        • Example: Metal = Magnesium Non-Metal = Bromine   Gas =  Oxygen
      • cannot be chemically interconverted or broken down into simpler substances and are primary constituents of matter.
      • Each element is distinguished by its atomic number, i.e. the number of protons in the nuclei of its atoms.
      • Elements can have very different properties
        • Elements such as silver, chromium, copper, and gold are shiny, solid metals. Other elements such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and chlorine are non-metals, and re gases at room temp
      • Elemental Symbols
        • First letter is always capitals and second letter is always lower case
    • Types of Atoms
      • Molecule
        • A group of two or more atoms bonded together
      • Mixture
        • Two or more unique atoms not chemically bonded together
      • Compound
        • Two or more different atoms chemically bonded together
          • It has to be two or more because if it was one. then it would be an element ( a single atom and is pure)
        • Chemical bonds hold the hydrogen and oxygen atoms together in a water molecule. Water is an example of a compound
    • Atoms.elements & compounds
      • ELEMENTS
        • An element is a pure substance
        • All elements in the same group of the periodic table have the same number of electrons in their highest Energy level (outer shell)
        • Elements are made of only one type of atom
        • Elements are arranged in order of their atomic numbers in the periodic table
      • ATOMS
        • All substances are made of tiny particles called atoms.
        • All atoms are made up of a tiny central nucleus with electrons orbiting around it
        • An atom is the smallest part of an element that can exist
        • It means indivisible. This means it cannot be divided up anymore
        • An atom is the smallest part of an element that can exist.
        • The atoms of the unreactive noble gases(group 0) all have very stable arrangements of electons
      • COMPOUNDS
        • Two or more different atoms chemically bonded together
        • Chemical bonds hold the atoms tightly together in compounds. Some compounds are made from just two types of atom (e.g.,water or carbon dioxide,CO2). However, most compounds consist of more than two different types of atom
        • Compounds contain more than one element
    • Key Points
      • All substances are made up of atoms
      • The periodic table lists all the chemical elements with eight main groups each containing elements with similar chemical properties.
      • Elements contain only one type of atom
      • Compounds contain more than one type of atom
      • An atom has a tiny nucleus at its centre, surrounded by electrons.
    • Forming bonds
