  • Biochemical tests
    • Starch
      • Test = Iodine solution
      • Positive Result = Orange/brown to Blue/Black
    • Lipids
      • Test = Equal volumes of water and ethanol (emulsion test)
      • positive result = white emulsion produced
    • Protein (enzymes)
      • Test = Biuret reagent
      • positive result = Blue to lilac/purple
    • Reducing Sugars (can reduce something)
      • Test = Benedict's and heat to 80 degrees
      • results =           blue = none   Green = traces              orange = moderate        Brick red = large ammount
      • E.g. monosacchari- des  like glucose, fructose, galactose and maltose
    • Non reducing sugars
      • Test = benedict's and heat to 80 degrees. if still blue hydrolyse it with acid and then neutralise with alkali and re test the benedict's
      • Positive result = turns from blue to red second time around
      • E.g disaccharides like sucrose and lactose
