  • Autonomous Ethics
    • Autonomous ethics claim that moral authority belongs to the individual
      • Therefore moral decisions are made situationally.
        • Some liberal Christian scholars have argued that a Christian should work out what to do in the moral dilemmas for themselves using some broad Christian values & apply in them to be the situation
    • Scholars
      • Paul Tillich
        • Love is the central percept of Christianity, but is underlined by justice & wisdom
        • The laws of the bible are the wisdom, but we must apply these laws in a way that is fir (justice), Tillich argues we will do this if our decisions are characterised by love
      • Joseph Fletcher
        • Situation ethics, teleological, agape, 4 presumption, 6 working principles
      • Hans Kung
        • Liberal RC scholar who advocates greater autonomy in ethics
        • Has been heavily criticised by some within the church eg Joseph Ratzinger who claims that Kung is undermining the Magisterium
        • Kung says that christian ethics is not that distinct as there is noting in that couldn't be found "in any person with good will"
        • Global ethic
          • kung wants to work toward global ethics, which identifies minimal consensus concerning binding values, irrevocable, standards & fundamental moral attitudes that world religions & atheist agree on
          • one of these binding values 'respect for life'
          • Kung argues that euthanasia altho contrary to RC official teaching, it is not contrary to the principles of catholic reasoning & conscience to conclude that keeping someone alive @ all costs is morally right
      • J A T Robinson
        • Described love as having a 'built in moral compass' which directs ppl to the most important need when required - we should trust love
      • Rudolph Bultmann
        • pointed out that Christians are not only challenged to be loving & kind to forgive wrongs. Christians therefore bring laws and judgments
      • Pope Francis
        • Has been reminding the RC to put love& forgiveness at the heart of their ethics, although he doesn't encourage rejection of the rules. eg he has urged Catholics to embrace & show love to homosexuals in their family
        • He says that the bible has rules, but also stories about real people who make mistakes & that those stories encourage compassionate responses
    • is principle of love sufficient?
      • 'Subjective & individualistic'
      • Too much freedom
      • Sometimes it is not possible to do a truly loving thing
      • Unpredictability of consequences
      • Jesus said he was the fulfilment of the law
      • Christians have 10 commandments & in the sermon on the mount Jesus raised the bar for Christian standard, making rules tighter
      • Justice & wisdom also needed - paul tillich
      • Humans are fallen
      • Law is 'distillation of human experience' - Charles Barkley
