  • Asthma
    • Causes
      • White blood cells on lining of bronchi release histamine = inflammation and increased mucus production
      • Allergic reaction to substances e.g. pollen, dust
        • Made worse by air pollution, stress, infection and exercise
      • Airways are constricted making it difficult to breathe properly
      • Fluid leaves capillaries and enters airway
    • Symptoms
      • Difficulty breathing
        • Constriction of the bronchi and bronchioles, their inflamed linings and additional mucus/fluid
      • Wheezing breaths
        • Air passing through very constricted bronchi and bronchioles
      • Coughing
        • Reflex response to clear obstructed bronchi and bronchioles
      • Tight chest
        • Unable to ventilate lungs because of constricted bronchi and bronchioles
