- Causes
- White blood cells on lining of bronchi release histamine = inflammation and increased mucus production
- Allergic reaction to substances e.g. pollen, dust
- Made worse by air pollution, stress, infection and exercise
- Airways are constricted making it difficult to breathe properly
- Fluid leaves capillaries and enters airway
- Symptoms
- Difficulty breathing
- Constriction of the bronchi and bronchioles, their inflamed linings and additional mucus/fluid
- Wheezing breaths
- Air passing through very constricted bronchi and bronchioles
- Coughing
- Reflex response to clear obstructed bronchi and bronchioles
- Tight chest
- Unable to ventilate lungs because of constricted bronchi and bronchioles
- Difficulty breathing
