  • Andes Mountain
    • Farming - subsistent crops e.g potatoes on the terraces.
      • Terraces- steps made to create flat areas.
        • Most crops are grown lower down in the valley, some cash crops such as cotton.
    • Male llamas are used as pack animals where as females are used for milk, meat & their wool is used for clothes & rugs.
    • HEP- steep narrow valleys are suitable for dam construction.
      • Steep relief gives fast flowing water which can turn turbines.
      • Peru has a no. of schemes including the Yuncan project & the El Platino that's under construction.
    • Mining- the Andes are rich in minerals- tin, nickel, silver & gold.
      • Yanacocha gold mine in Peru is the largest in the world & has led to the expansion of the town Cajamarca from 30000 to 240000 inhabitants.
    • Tourism- high mountains provide spectacular scenery of high peaks, valleys, lakes & glaciers.
      • Ancient areas of settlement e.g Machu Picchu & the Inca trail - 45km trek in the mountains.
