  • Advantages of FPTP
    • speed and simplicity
      • easy to use - single cross
      • result - early in morning after polling day
        • example - May 2010 GE
          • required only a 5 day process before a Coalition Agreement had been drawn up + signed after cross-party talks
        • example: NE constituency of Houghton + Sunderland South has for the past 6 elections been 1st to declare results - under an hour
    • strong and stable government
      • tends to promote 2 party system - voters given clear choice
      • favours majority parties + gives winners' bonus
        • single-party govts w/ working majorities have lots of control over leg process + can carry out mandate
          • example: Thatcher in 1980s
            • allowed her to carry out her plans for reduction of trade union power + privatisation
          • example: Blair in 1997
            • allowed him to undertake extensive constitutional reforms
    • exclusion of extremists
      • under-represents smaller parties, but extreme parties less likely to gain seats
        • example - BNP
    • strong link between MPs and their constituencies
      • relatively small size of each constituency + only single MP responsible for representing ppl
      • correspond w/ ppl + hold surgeries where they make themselves available to ppl seeking help + advice
        • example: Stephen Timmins MP
          • Labour MP  - represents East Ham in London
          • held record for greatest no. of surgeries in 2011
          • even did after he was stabbed by Islamic extremist at a surgery prev year
      • allows for  a close + productive constituency representation- visible channel of communication
