Human rights are rights that every human has. There are 30 articles which state what humans should have the right to

What do Christians believe about human rights?
They believe that human rights belong to everyone regardless of status, race or religion. Pope Paul VI says “the church feels wounded in her own person whenever a man’s rights are violated or disregarded”

Article 1 - Born free and equal
To be born free and equal is to not have slavery/imprisonment if you are innocent and not treated differently for something you can’t control

Article 4 - Nobody can own slaves
The definition of slavery is doing an action against their will, usually through force and not being paid for it. An example of this is human trafficking

The responsibilities of wealth
1) Some Christians believe Jesus wants all his followers to reject money and be spiritually rich instead
2) Others say how we spend our money is important, it must be used wisely

Wealth and exploitation
The Christian Church teaches that Christians should use money to provide for themselves and family but also for those in need.
Exploitation: when a person/company misuses their power to make others do work for little or unfair pay

Poverty
43% of people live without basic sanitation. 20% of people own 75% of wealth. 1/4 of people live without electricity. Reasons for poverty include:
-Hard to find jobs
-corrupt government
-poverty trap
-Country GDP

Racism
The Christian Teaching: “Love your neighbour as yourself”
Prejudice- Having a pre-formed opinion that isn’t based on reason
Discrimination - The unjust treatment of different people
Racist incidents went up by 50% in a year in football related things

Greed and Materialism
Greed- the desire to have more regardless of need
“take care; be on your guard against all types of greed, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions”(Luke 12:15)
Religious people promise to take a vow of poverty and commit to sharing

Equality
There are different rights for different groups of people by the Equality and Human Rights commission eg. Gender, race, age..
Christians teach that all people are children of God and so should be treated with respect

Racial Equality
In 2020/2021, there were over 92,000 racist incidents recorded by the police in England & Wales, roughly 252 per day.Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela were 2 prominent black activists for equal rights. Their work has shaped equal rights.

Religious Prejudice
Pre-judging someone because of their religion.
1)some countries have an official state religion with strict rules on how you can practice your faith
2) example is China, who have a government controlled system of churches. Christians who don’t follow this
