Amplitude
Displacement of rest to crest
1 of 12
Wavelength
Length of crest to crest
2 of 12
Frequency
Number of complete waves produced from source/passing certain point each second
3 of 12
Transverse waves
Oscillations are perpendicular [90°] to direction of energy transfer
4 of 12
Longitudinal waves
Oscillations are parallel to direction or energy transfer
5 of 12
Equation for Wave speed
Wavespeed [m/s] = Frenquency [Hz] x Wavelength [m]
6 of 12
Law of Reflection
Angle of Incidence = Angel of Reflection [angles are always measured between ray and normal]
7 of 12
Plane mirrors
Image is - same size as object, same distance from mirror as object, is virtual and upright and laterally inverted (swapped round)
8 of 12
Diffraction
Waves spread out to pass through a gap. The narrower the gap, the longer the wavelength and the more diffraction.
9 of 12
Diffraction of light
Light has a very small wavelength so needs a small gap to diffract.
10 of 12
Refraction
When a wave crosses a boundary between two mediums and changes speed. Denser = slows down+refracts towards normal. Less Dense = speeds up+refracts away from normal
11 of 12
Triangular prisms
Different wavelengths refract by different amounts. Upon entering a triangular prism, white light disperses into different colours. Violet refracts most (longest wavelength)
