Uses of EM radiation

?
How does non-ionising radiation cause heat?
Light doesn't have enough energy to change atoms. When it's absorbed by a substance it transfers energy to the atoms/molecules of the substance and heats them up.
1 of 11
The more ? the radiation and the ? the exposure, the ? the heating effect.
1. intense 2. longer 3. greater
2 of 11
This heating effect can cause..?
damage living cells
3 of 11
How do ovens and microvens work?
Ovens use infrared radiation and microvens use microwaves
4 of 11
* How do microwaves work?
Make particles vibrate, heating them up. Some microwaves are strongly absorbed by water molecules and so can heat things containing water.
5 of 11
How do microwave ovens work?
Microwave ovens come in different power ratings. More powerful ovens produce higher intensity radiation, so less time is needed to produce the same heating effect.
6 of 11
Why do microwave ovens have metal cases and screens over their glass doors?
To reflect and absorb microwaves to stop them getting out
7 of 11
What are the health risks of using mobile phones?
The phone emits microwave radiation, some of this radiation is absorbed by your body causing heating of your body tissue (which contain water) Heating tissues of the brain and jaw could increase the risk of medical conditions possibly including cance
8 of 11
What are microwaves used for?
Used to send signals between mobile phones and mobile phone masts
9 of 11
How to minimise health risks when using a mobile phone
The radiation is of low intensity so heating is probably minor. Talk for a short time to minimise the heating effect.
10 of 11
How do mobile phone masts cause health problems?
People who live very close to masts are worried about the possible effects. There isn't enough evidence and any health problems would take longer to emerge.
