Unit 2 kinetics and equilibria flash cards

?
What is the activation energy?
minimum amount of energy to start the reaction
1 of 12
Explain collision theory
Molecules must approach each other at the correct angles and alignment with the activation energy. Molecules can only react if they collide, increasing frequency of collisions will increase the rate of reaction
2 of 12
How can you increase the rate of reaction?
increase concentration (pressure), temperature, or surface area
3 of 12
What does the maxwell boltzmann distribution show?
Most probably energy(Emp), average energy(E), activation energy (EA)
4 of 12
What effect does increasing the temperature have?
the peak will shift to the right and level out meaning more molecules have the EA and will therefore be able to react if they collide. The frequency of collisions will also increase as the molecules have more kinetic energy on average.
5 of 12
What does an energy profile diagram show?
the energy required to both break and make the bonds, including the EA and DeltaH
6 of 12
How does a catalyst work?
IT provides an alternative route to lower the activation energy, which leads to an increase in the frequency of reactions, but not the frequency of collision
7 of 12
What is a reversable reaction?
a reaction that goes in both directions, both forward and backwards.
8 of 12
What takes place in a reversible reaction?
the rate of the forward decreases as the reactants are used up and the rate of the reverse increases as more product is produced. Eventually the rate will be the same for both reaction as the overall conc of reactants+products will stop changing
9 of 12
What is dynamic equilibrium?
when the forward and backward reactions proceed at the same rate and the concentrations are the same
10 of 12
What does Le Chantelier's principle state?
if a system's equilibrium is subject to change, the position of equilibrium will shift to remove theeffect of the change
11 of 12
what effect does a catalyst have on the position of the equilibrium?
it has no effect because it increases the rate of the forward and backwards reaction equally
