Chomsky's model
believed the ability to develop a spoken/signed language is preprogrammed, can understand and use language regardless of other abilities, fluent in first language by 7 years

born with it, allows us to recognise + develop language we experience, evolves naturally, language develops because of maturation, cant learn through imitation alone, applies to all languages

Chomsky's model - criticisms
lack of scientific evidence, Bruner- social interactions in early development are critical, over emphasises grammar rather meaning, doesn't consider children with delayed language development

Bowlby's theory
attachment, children preprogrammed to form attachments, up to 2 years- critical period, caregiver provides comfort + safety, infants seek close proximity to caregiver when threatened

Bowlby's theory- criticisms
oversimplified his theory, Rutter- maternal deprivation may not cause long term problems but privation is more damaging, attachment is learnt and influenced by environment

Schaffer + Emerson
aimed to investigate the formations of early attachments, studied 60 babies for first 18 months of life

stages of attachment
babies studies in own home, babies visited monthly, mother kept diary and interviewed, stranger anxiety, separation anxiety, social referencing
