Who is Piaget, What did he do?
He was a psychologist who studied how our ability to think and reason develops. He proposed a cognitive-developmental theory.

1, Piaget's methods were innovative at the time 2, Recent research suggets this is difficult to replicate unless you follow the principles exactly 3, Used in today's education.

Limitations of Piaget
1, modification is a huge problem, making tasks child friendly makes them more achievable 2, Piaget criticised for his sampling method, used his own children/friends 3, Ages/stages are too prescriptive leading to underestimation/overestimation.

Who is Chomsky and What did he do?
A psychologist who suggested that our ability to develop a signed or spoken language is genetically programmed into us.

Chomsky's language development at 3 months
Infants begin to make babbling noises as they learn to control their speech muscles.

Chomsky's language development at 12 months
Infants begin to imitate sounds made by carers such as 'dada'. This develops into single words.

Chomsky's language development at 2 years
Infants begin to make 2-word sentences like 'cat-goed'- the cat has gone-. They also begin to build their vocabulary.

Chomsky's langauage development at 3 years
Children begin to make simple sentences 'i want a drink'. This develops into the ability to ask questions. Knowledge of voccab grows quickly.

Chomsky's language development at 4 years
Children begin to use clear sentences, although they make grammar mistakes.

Chomsky's language development at 5 years
Children can speak using adult grammar although vocab will continue to grow. By 5, children can be expected to use language effectively.

1, All people go through the same stages 2, We're told about grammar at school, we already know how to use it before we are taught.
