Transition element
a d-block element that has an incomplete d-sub-shell as a stable ion
1 of 11
Complex ion
A transition metal ion bonded to one or more ligands by coordinate bonds
2 of 11
Ligand
A species that can donate a pair of electrons to the transition metal ion to form a coordiante bond
3 of 11
Coordination number
Total number of coordinate bonds formed between a contral metal ion and its ligands
4 of 11
Bidentate ligands
Have two pairs of electrons from different atoms to donate to the central metal
5 of 11
Monodentate ligands
Ligand donates just one pair of electrons to the central metal ion to form one coordinate bond
6 of 11
Multidentate ligands
Has multiple lone pairs of electrons available to form cooridnation bonds
7 of 11
Stereoisomers
A species with the same structural formula but with a different arrangement of the atoms in space
8 of 11
Optical isomers
Moleucles which are non-superimposable mirror images of each other. Same chemical properties but interact with polarised light differently
9 of 11
Ligand substitution reaction
A ligand in a complex ion is replaced by another lignad
10 of 11
Precipitation reactions
Soluble ions, in seperate solutions, are mixed together to produce an insoluble compound
