Introduction to transition metals

What are transition metals?

  • Transition metals exist in the d-block
  • Most of the transition metals in the d-block are transition metals and you only need to know about the first row.
  • Zinc and Scandium are not transition metals.

--> A transition metal is one that can form one or more stable ions and have a partially filled d-subshell.

Transition metals will always have electrons in their d- subshell's and their s-subshell. The s-subshell will always be full ( except with copper and chromium).The d-orbitals can hold 10 electrons. When electrons are removed- the s-subshell electrons are removed first.
