What do ONS and DCMS stand for?
Office for National Statistics
and
Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

What is direct employment?
Jobs created by and are within the tourism industry, such as Flight Attendants and Travel Agents.

What is indirect employment?
Jobs that supply and support the travel and tourism industry, such as builders and suppliers.

They don't meet tourists but deal with the people that do.

What are full time/part time jobs?

What are the advantages and disadvantages?
Full time jobs are standard contract jobs where the employee works for a certain amount of hours.
Part time jobs are similar but work less hours, usually more flexible.

Full time staff are likely to be loyal and well trained, whilst part time staff are

What are fixed-term/temporary jobs?

What are the advantages and disadvantages?
Where an employee works during a certain period or event, such as festivals and seasonal jobs.

Good for when the employee needs some money in a short amount of time. Length of time is very clear. Employers only have to pay employees when they're needed.

What are zero hour contracts?

What are the advantages and disadvantages?
No guarantee of work but can be called in if needed.

Good for employers to know they have people if needed. Employee doesn't have to work.

The employee will only get paid when used which means they may not be paid at all.

Management?
Someone that oversees a whole business or service and makes sure everything runs smoothly.

Examples - Hotel Manager, Airport Manager

Supervisory?
Someone that oversees a specific part of a business or service, such as pursers and housekeepers.

Operative?
Someone that carries out the tasks in a business. Flight attendants, cleaners etc.

What is market segmentation?
Dividing consumers based on commonalities and shared characteristics. This is bc you cannot appeal to everyone, so a business works out who they appeal to most and works out common consumer needs to increase appeal.

What is Geographic Segmentation?
Based on the assumption that people from the same places (countries, counties, states, cities, towns) may share characteristics.

It is worth advertising products with mountains to non-mountainous countries, and hot climate to cold etc

What is Demographic Segmentation?
Separates tourists based on gender, age, family structure, ethnicity, economic background.

Young people may want cheaper and more active trips, whilst older people may want pre-planned relaxing breaks.

What is psychographic segmentation?
Considers the lifestyles and interests of tourists. The interests of a tourist may decide what sort of activities they want to do.

Behavioural Segmentation
Based on consumer habits and brand loyalty.

It is difficult to get tourists that always stay at a specific hotel to do something different, and it is worth marketing to loyal customers as they are more likely to buy the product.

What is Visit Britain?
Visit Britain is an NGO (Non-governmental organisation). It is funded by the DCMS. It aims to market the UK as a tourism destination and grow inbound tourism.

A destination with historical meaning or attractions.

Can be related to arts, music and other local norms and traditions.

What are some economic factors affecting tourism?
Exchange rates. Destinations may be more unattractive if they are more expensive. Destinations or attractions may have to lower prices in order to attract more visitors.

The value of money of the economy may mean people have less disposable income.

What are environmental objectives?
Climate change has made it so that sustainable travel is more appealing to consumers. Therefore, businesses may have to set objective relating to the environment.

An example could be:
Decrease carbon emissions by 50% by the end of the calendar year.

A company may create goals relating to finance and making money, such as: Increase sales by 25% by 'x', or, reduce costs by 5% by 'x'.
