what is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Water + Co2 = Oxygen +Glucose
1 of 28
what is photosynthesis?
The breakdown of water molecules using energy from light
2 of 28
What is the chemical equation on photosynthesis?
6Co2 + 6H2O = C6H12O6 +6O2
3 of 28
What enzyme is used in Photosynthesis?
RUBISCO
4 of 28
What COenzyme is used in Photosynthesis?
NADP
5 of 28
Where does Photosynthesis take place?
Chloroplast
6 of 28
Describe the structure of a chloroplast?
Flattened
7 of 28
What is the double membrane in Photosynthesis called?
Chloroplast envelope
8 of 28
What is the function of the thylakoids?
To provide a large surface area for light to be absourbed
9 of 28
What is the structure of many thylakoids stacked up on each other?
Granum
10 of 28
what links the granum?
Lamella
11 of 28
What are photosynthetic pigments?
Coloured substances that absorb light energy
12 of 28
Where are these pigments found?
Thylakoid membranes
13 of 28
Name 3 differences between light dependent and light independent reactions?
-one needs light the other does not
-the dependent happens in the thylakoids and the independent happens in the stroma
-ATP and reduced NADP are made in the dependent reaction, where as they are used to supply energy and hydrogen to make glucose
14 of 28
Describe what happens in photosystem 2?
-Light hit PSII and it begins to excite the electrons.
-The electrons then move to a higher energy level
-Allowing them to move along the electron chain to PS1
15 of 28
What does the energy released from excited electrons do?
To move protons from the stroma to the thylakoids
16 of 28
As the electrons move along the transport chain what must happen?
They must be replaced by water being split by light energy into protons, electron and oxygen.
17 of 28
What is the name of this process?
Photolysis
18 of 28
Once the protons have moved into the thylakoids what what happens?
A proton gradient is formed
19 of 28
What does this proton gradient cause?
The protons to move down the ATP synthase, forming ATP
20 of 28
How is NADPH formed?
Light excites the electrons, giving them higher energy levels causing them to be transferred to NADP along with a proton, forming NADPH
21 of 28
Where does the Calvin cycle take place?
the stroma
22 of 28
What catalyses RuBP and Co2 to join?
RUBISCO
23 of 28
What then forms?
GP 6 carbon compound
24 of 28
What happens to GP?
-ATP is hydrolysed to provide energy
-NADPH is oxidised
25 of 28
What does this form?
GALP 6 carbon compound
26 of 28
What is released from this compound?
Glucose 1 carbon
27 of 28
Name for organic substances produced from the Calvin cycle?
-carbohydrates
-Lipids
-amino acids
-nucleic acids
