What was Rutherford's experiment?
He tried firing a beam of alpha particles at thin gold foil; this was called the Alpha Scattering Experiment.
1 of 9
What was expected to happen in Rutherford's experiment according to the Plum pudding model?
They expected the alpha particles to pass straight through the gold sheet of foil or be deflected slightly.
2 of 9
What happened in Rutherford's experiment?
Most particles did go straight through, some were deflected more than expected but some were deflected back the way they came from - the plum pudding model couldn't explain this.
3 of 9
What was the conclusion of Rutherford's experiment?
As most particles passed almost directly through, most of the atom must be empty space with most of the mass concentrated at the centre in a tiny, positively charged nucleus to repel the few alpha particles that bounced back the way they came.

What did both John Dalton and Democritus agree upon? And what did Dalton disagree with?
That matter was made up of tiny spheres that couldn't be broken up. John thought each element was made up of a different type of sphere - he named these "Atoms".

What did J.J.Thomson discover?
He discovered particles called electrons that could be removed from atoms. He suggested that atoms were spheres of positive charge with tiny negative electrons stuck in them like fruit in a plum pudding - hence the "Plum Pudding Model".

What did Niels Bohr find out?
That electrons orbit the nucleus at certain distances called energy levels. His theoretical calculations and experimental data agreed.
7 of 9
What happened after Niels Bohr founded his evidence?
Further experiments changed the model to have a nucleus made up of a group of particles called protons which all had the same positive charge that added up to the overall charge of the nucleus.

What did James Chadwick have to do with the current model of the atom?
In 1932 he proved the existance of the neutron, which explained the imbalance between the atomic and mass numbers.
