What is tissue fluid?
The solution surrounding the cells. Its composition is similar to plasma but without proteins

The liquid part of blood that contains dissolved glucose, amino acids, salts, vitamins and suspended proteins and fats

What is hydrostatic pressure?
The pressure created by the pumping of the heart

Where is tissue fluid forced out of the capillary?
At the arteriole end of the capillary

What causes tissue fluid to be pushed out of the arteriole end?
The effect of hysdrostatic pressure is greater than that of osmotic pressure

When the tissue fluid is pushed out from the capillary, what is left behind?
Cells and large proteins

Where is tissue fluid reabsorbed back into the capillary?
At the venule end of the capillary

Why is tissue fluid reabsorbed at the venule end?
The effect of the water potential is higher than that of hydrostatic pressure

Why does the water potential increase along the capillary?
The tissue fluid is taken out of the capillary, reducing water concentration inside. Also proteins are left behind in the capillary, further decreasing the concentration of water. The water outside becomes more concentrated than the water inside.

Why does hydrostatic pressure decrease along the capillary?
It becomes further away from the heart

Not all the tissue fluid is reabsorbed intp the capillary- where do the rest go?
Into the lymphatic capillary

What is th lymphatic system?
It consists of network of lymphatic vessels flowing alongside the veins leading towards the heart, where the lymph system drains back into the blood system

Where does the contents of the lymph system drain back into the blood?
At the superior vena cava

What types of cells make up the lymphatic capillaries at the cells?
Endothelial cells

Why are there gaps between the lymph endothelial cells?
To allow large molecules such as proteins and fats through

It is similar to tissue fluid but with more fats from the digestive system

55% plasma, less than 1% white blood cells + platelets, 45% red blood cells
