Clues

  • A mega colossal volcano that erupts at least 1,000km3 of material. (14)
  • A sudden and breif period of intense ground shaking. (11)
  • Broad volcanoes mostly made up of lava. Frequent and non-violent eruptions. Wide base and gentle slopes. Low, rounded peak. Layers of runny lava with little ash. (6, 9)
  • Deep sections of ocean, usually where an oceanic plate is sinking below a continental plate. (5, 8)
  • Dense oceanic crust is subducted underneath lighter continental crust. Great pressure casuses severe earthquakes. The oceanic crust melts and causes violent volcanic eruptions. (11)
  • Large mountain ranges where rock layers have been crumpled as they have been forced together, e.g.: The Andes. Occur at destructive and collision margins. (4, 9)
  • Plates move apart underneath the ocean and new land is formed as magma forces its way to the surface to form volcanoes, e.g.: Iceland. (12)
  • Plates slide past each other at slightly different speeds and slightly different angles, but generally in the same direction. Pressure builds up and when released cause earthquakes. Crust is neither destroyed nor made. (12)
  • Steepsided volcanoes that are made up of a variety pf materials, such as lava and ash. Infrequent but often violent eruptions e.g.: Mount St Helens. Steep slopes and narrow base. Maybe has a secondary cone. Layers of thick, viscious lava and ash. (9, 9)
  • Two continental plates meet each other and collide, causing earthquakes and fold mountains. (9)
