Mrs Ericson’s offer to be with Marian was framed by her as being to do with age. Marian’s response shows she understands the reality that she is likely to be discriminated against because she is black and it may be of benefit to have a white ally

Mrs Ericson seems to be frustrated and helpless. It’s implied she thinks it’s Marians own fault. Her sliding might suggest she is giving up on driving and accepting that she’ll never pass her test. she is handing over control
