When Mrs Ericson tries to play down her previous driving test failure, Marian replies: ‘I don’t remember doing all the things the inspector marked down on my blank.’

Marian knew she was being discriminated against, as she knew she didn’t make those mistakes. Mrs Ericson is oblivious or in denial of the problem

She’s grown to expect it, she seems cool and level headed, or at least doesn’t show that she’s all that bothered.

After Marian stalls the car and the inspector mocks her, saying, ‘Now Mistress Mandy…remember your degree,’ Marian replies, ‘Damn you!’

Marian is fed up with the inspector taunting and mocking her, what he says implies that he thinks she doesn’t deserve it.

When Mrs Ericson asks Marian if she’s failed ‘again’, she replies, ‘In a sort of different way.’ Before sliding over to the passenger side.

Mrs Ericson seems to be frustrated and helpless, she seems to think it’s Marian’s fault
