The prolet1arian art movement to nurture talent amongst working ppl. Set up 300 studios across Russia Published 'Gorn', a monthly paper showing off some proletarian ppl's art.

Argued best culture = universal, not just proletarian / bourgeoise...just human. Was independent of party control

What was avant-garde?
New styles / techniques to make revolutionary art. Influences from shapes, dreams, technology. E.g. Mayakovsky made graphic posters during civil war. Rodchenko used photomontage to celebrate revolution.

What was socialist realism?
Traditional techniques e.g. Realistic art (look like photos) & of factory workers. Novels had to have a plot that ppl could follow. E.g. Novel 'cement' about group of workers who had big role in C.W. rebuild a factory. Stalin = focus of painting
