What components are in the central nervous system?
The brain and spinal cord
1 of 26
What components are in the peripheral nervous system?
Sense organs and neurones
2 of 26
Function of the brain
Controls all complex behaviour. It is made up of 86billion connecting neurones and has different regions that carry out different functions
3 of 26
Cerebrum
This is the largest part of the brain. The right hemisphere controls muscles on the left side of the body and visa versa
4 of 26
Cerebellum
Responsible for muscle coordination and balance
5 of 26
Medulla Oblongata
Controls unconscious activities like breathing, heart rate and sneezing
6 of 26
CT Scanner
Uses X rays to produce an image of the brain
7 of 26
Stimulus
A change in an organisms surroundings
8 of 26
Receptor
Something which detects a change in an organisms surroundings
9 of 26
Effector
A muscle or gland that brings about a response to a stimulus
10 of 26
Neurones
Specialised cells which carry electrical impulses
11 of 26
Dendron
Carries the message before the cell body in a sensory neurone
12 of 26
Myelin sheath
Insulation in a neurone
13 of 26
Axon
Carries the message after the cell body in a sensory neurone
14 of 26
Sensory neurones
Neurones that link sense organs to the CNS
15 of 26
Relay Neurones
Neurones within the CNS which may be very short
16 of 26
PET Scanners
Dye is injected into the body so that problems can be highlighted visually
17 of 26
Motor neurones
Neurones that connect the CNS to an effector such as a muscle
18 of 26
Reflex actions
Rapid, automatic responses of the nervous system which do not involve conscious thought
19 of 26
Reflex arc
Signals pass directly from a sensory neurone via a relay neurone to a motor neurone
20 of 26
Synapse
Where two neurones meet, there is a tiny gap called a synapse
21 of 26
Neurotransmitters
Signals which cross a synapse
22 of 26
Ciliary muscle
Involved in changing the shape of the lens
23 of 26
Cornea
Refracts light rays
24 of 26
Pupil
A hole allowing light to enter the eye
25 of 26
Iris
Regulates the amount of light entering the pupil
