Who proposed the geocentric model of the solar system?
Ptolemy
1 of 12
What is the geocentric model?
The Earth is in the centre and everything else (the sun,the moon, planets and the stars) move around the Earth in circular orbits.
2 of 12
What are epicycles?
A small circle whose centre moves around the circumference of a larger one.
3 of 12
What is a retrograde motion?
The motion of a planet to move in an opposite direction to other bodies within its system.
4 of 12
What did Ptolemy use to explain the retrograde motion of mars?
Epicycles
5 of 12
Who proposed the heliocentric model?
Nikolaus Copernicus.
6 of 12
When did he propose it?
14 century
7 of 12
What did the heliocentric model state?
The sun is at the centre of the solar system and planets move round the sun in circular orbits and the moon orbits the Earth, planets further away from the sun orbited slower than planets close to the sun and stars were fixed in a dome beyond saturn.
8 of 12
What were the flaws in the model?
It did not accurately predict the position of the planets as he used circular orbits.
9 of 12
What are elliptical orbits?
An oval shaped orbit.
10 of 12
Who observed the night sky using a telescope in the 17th century?
Galileo Galilei
11 of 12
