Norris and Inglehart - Existential Security Theory
Poor communities and those that feel less secure turn towards religion for security and hope during times of war etc. USA has no welfare state and therefore religion helps to provide this support. Middle class use religion for social networking.

Weber - Marginalisation Theory
Most marginalised are likely to join sects as they have nowhere else to go and, are chosen by sects to join, telling them they are the 'chosen ones'. Love bombing, deprived of sleep but fed messages of love and hope.

Use NAM's to gain status outside of the domestic sphere and feel a sense of belonging

Middle class who have status in their career and feel stress from this find that having a spiritual outlet helps to relieve these stresses. (Peaches Geldoff) NAM's are more rational and scientific=suit educated middle class

Opium of the people; Bourgeoisie need religion to control proletariat (Ideological state apparatus). Creates a false class consciousness and gives them hope to maintain a passive workforce.

NAM's are world affirming and therefore are accepting of people's lives and commitments, making it easier to take part.
