ppl have to give particular impressions of themselves through clothing, language, etc and this lets us prevent ourselves in a desirable way, w/o social interactions, individuals can lose sense of self

ppl take diff roles depending on the didd social contexts they are in

-deterministic (assumes labels stick)
-ignores wider social conflicts that shapes behaviours
-methodology used is subjective and small scale, based on researchers interpretations to prove a specific point

what is phenomenology?
phenomenon- things that appear to our senses
no definition knowledge of what the world outside is like, only know what our minds tell us about it
