sleep disorders - SLEEP WALKING

?
What is the name of the model for sleep walking?
the stress diathesis model
1 of 15
what does the diathesis part of the model state?
that there is a genetic predisposition to sleepwalking
2 of 15
what is the genetic disposition?
incomplete arousal
3 of 15
what is incomlpete arousal?
a state between sleep and wakefullness
4 of 15
what type of sleep does sleepwalking occur in?
slow wave sleep (SWS)
5 of 15
what do typical EEG readings of SWS show?
a typical EEG reading of SWS shows delta waves but also higher frequence beta waves which are a characteristic of an awake state.
6 of 15
therefore what does this show causes sleepwalking?
it suggests that sleepwalking occurs when the person in SWS is awakened but the arousal of the brain is incomplete so they still appear asleep.
7 of 15
why do people grow out of sleepwalking?
due to maturation of key neural circuits, when the circuits mature sleepwalking stops.
8 of 15
what factors can increase the liklihood of sleepwalking and why?
factors such as sleep deprivation, drinking alcohol and having a fever as these all increase the amount of SWS.
9 of 15
What are the types of determinism relevant for the IDA?
biological determinism and environmental determinism.
10 of 15
what part of the model is bioloigcally determinist?
the diathesis part, it states we inherit a predisposition to incomplete arousal.
11 of 15
what part of the model is enviromentally determinist?
the stress part, external factors such as alcohol and illness.
12 of 15
Name two pieces of evidence for the model
Bakwin and Basseti
13 of 15
what did the research by Bakwin find?
a 47% concordance rate for sleepwalking in MZ twins and only a 7% concordance rate in DZ twins.
14 of 15
what did the research by Basseti find?
found that 50% of sleepwalkers had a version of the HLA gene found in only 24% of non sleepwalkers.
