Background
Shallow focus (30km), lasted 2 minutes, 7.9 on the Richter Scale, felt on the coastline.

Causes
Convection currents in the mantle - destructive collision of the Eurasian and Indo-Australian plates along the Longmenshan fault line.

Primary effects
2 chemical plants leakded amonia into the water, 1/3 of the buildings collapsed, collapse of a school killed 50 students, dam collaplsed, 20,000 missing, 70,000 killed in fires.

Secondary effects
Aftershocks caused landslides/lack of food/loss of homes, Red Cross gave £100 million, however cost of repair was not as drastic as Kobe as the infrastructure was poor, contaminated water, DIDN'T RESPOND WELL TO PRIMARY EFFECTS.

Short term repsonses
POOR RESPONSE- delayed by 3 days, small scale, only sent 15 helicopters, inaccessible, focused on getting people out of the rubble (by hand- had no technical equipment, 3 million tents needed.

Long term response
China gave $10 million, Red Cross gave $100 million (external output was greater), many charities helped, individuals going over to help.
