What is a seismic wave?
Waves that transmit the energy released by earthquakes in all directions
1 of 6
What is a seismic wave and what does it do?
These travel through solids and liquids, the waves push and pull the earth in the same direction as the wave is travelling, they travel faster than other types of seismic waves
2 of 6
What is a secondary wave and what does it do?
These can only travel through solids. The waves move the earth at 90 degrees to the direction of travel. These are dangerous because of their shearing effect
3 of 6
What are the 2 types of surface waves?
Love waves and Rayleigh waves
4 of 6
What are love waves?
Only travel through solids, they move the surface from side to side causing a damaging shearing effect
5 of 6
What are Rayleigh waves?
Rayleigh waves can travel through liquids and solids, they move the surface in a rolling motion
