Mounds or ridges of drifted sand.
1 of 5
What do sand dunes need to form?
A wind or breeze to pick up the sand particles, a large area with little or no vegetation with loose sand grains, such as a dried up river and finally an obstacle which causes the sand to lose momentum. It can be something small (rock) or big (tree)
2 of 5
How do they travel?
Saltation: 95% of grains move in this manner. They bounce along with the wind. Creep: 4% - collide withother material such as clay causing them to move. Suspension: 1% - suspended high in the air then settle

What is an embryo dune?
The first part of the dune to develop. Stabilisation occurs via marram and lyme grass, which acts as traps for sand. Conditions are dry and plants adapt to this via long roots or thorny leaves to reduce evapotranspiration.
