What are the three processes of rivers?
Erosion, Transportation, Deposition.
1 of 26
Where does deposition take place?
Where the river slows down.
2 of 26
Why does deposition take place?
The water power is weaker.
3 of 26
What is erosion?
Wearing away of material.
4 of 26
What is attrition?
Particles in water bash together + smooth out.
5 of 26
What is a solution?
Water that carries a solute.
6 of 26
What is Abrasion?
Smooths bed + reduces size of sediment.
7 of 26
What is Hydraulic Power?
Power of water on the base of the river.
8 of 26
What is Lateral Erosion?
Sideways erosion.
9 of 26
What is Vertical Erosion?
Downwards erosion.
10 of 26
What is Traction?
Rocks are rolled at high flow.
11 of 26
What is Saltation?
Hopping motion of sediment/rock on bed.
12 of 26
What is Suspension?
Small particles held up within the water.
13 of 26
What is Deposition?
Sediment is dumped where river slows down.
14 of 26
What is Discharge?
Amount of water flowing through a river at any one time (Q).
15 of 26
What is Wave Refraction?
The bending of the wave around obstacles.
16 of 26
What is Fetch?
How far waves have come, waves have more energy.
17 of 26
What is Longshore Drift?
Process of how material moves due to wind/waves- waves approach at an angle has swash + backwash.
18 of 26
What are Constructive Waves?
Strong swash, Weak backwash.
19 of 26
What are Destructive Waves?
Weak swash, Strong backwash.
20 of 26
What is a Beach?
Accumulation of material, found where deposition occurs.
21 of 26
What is a Spit?
A long narrow finger of sediment away from land into the sea.
22 of 26
What is Soft Engineering?
A sustainable approach to managing the coastline without the use of artificial structures.
23 of 26
What is Hard Engineering?
The use of artificial structures aimed at controlling the natural processes occuring at the coast.
24 of 26
What is Managed Retreat?
Sea is allowed to erode the coast and human uses are slowly moved away from the costal edge to safer places.
25 of 26
What are the two main threats to coastlines?
Coastal Erosion, Coastal Flooding.
