Respiration

?
What are the chemical reactions inside cells controlled by?
Enzymes.
1 of 11
What 2 things happen during aerobic respiration?
Glucose and oxygen is used up and energy is released.
2 of 11
Where do most of the reactions in aerobic respiration take place?
Inside mitochondria.
3 of 11
What is the equation for respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen ----> Carbon Dioxide + Water (+energy)
4 of 11
What can the energy produced from repiration be used for?
To build larger molecules from smaller ones, muscle contraction in animals, to maintain a steady body temperature in colder surroundings & to build up sugars, nitrates and other nutrients into amino acids which are then built up into proteins.
5 of 11
What changes take place during exercise?
The heart rate increases and the rate & depth of breathing increases.
6 of 11
How do muscles store glucose?
As glycogen, which can then be converted back into glucose for use during exercise.
7 of 11
What happens if insufficient oxygen is supplied to the muscles during exercise?
The cells begin to respire anaerobically.
8 of 11
What is anaerobic respiration?
The incomplete breakdown of glucose and produces lactic acid.
9 of 11
What is the down fall to anaerobic respiration?
Much less energy is produced as the breakdown of glucose is incomplete. Also anaerobic respiration results in an oxygen debt that has to be repaid in order to oxidise lactic acid to carbon dioxide and water.
10 of 11
If you subject your muscles to long periods of vigorous exercise, what happens?
Your muscles become fatigued (they stop contracting efficiently). The main cause of muscle fatigue is a build up of lactic acid.
