Respiration

?
Respiration is not....
Breathing in and out.
1 of 22
Does it just happen in humans?
No, it happens in plants too. All living things respire.
2 of 22
Involves many reactions all of which are catalysed by....
Enzymes.
3 of 22
Why are these reactions important?
Because respiration releases energy that the cell needs to do just about everything.
4 of 22
Respiration is....
The process of releasing energy from the breakdown of glucose.
5 of 22
Does it go on in every cell in your body?
Yes.
6 of 22
Its how they....
Release energy from their food.
7 of 22
Aerobic respiration is respiration using....
Oxygen.
8 of 22
Is this more or less efficient to release energy from glucose than anaerobic respiration?
More efficient.
9 of 22
When does aerobic respiration take place, and in what?
All the time, in plants and animals.
10 of 22
Where do most of the reactions in aerobic respiration happen?
Inside the mitochondria.
11 of 22
What is the overall word equation?
Glucose+ Oxygen----> Carbon Dioxide
12 of 22
What four things is the energy from respiration used for?
····To build up larger molecules from smaller one ····In animals, to allow the muscles ····In mammals and birds the energy is used to keep their body temperature steady ····In plants, too build sugars, nitrates, and other nutrients into amino acids.
13 of 22
What does exercise increase?
Heart rate
14 of 22
What does an increase in muscle activity require? And where does it need to be supplied to?
More glucose and oxygen. Supplied to the muscle cells.
15 of 22
What does physical activity do?
Increases your breathing rate, makes you breathe more deeply and demand for extra oxygen.... Increases the speed at which the heart pumps.
16 of 22
Doing alot of excersize uses glucose rapidly so what happens?
Some of the stored glycogen is converted back to glucose to provide more energy.
17 of 22
Aerobic excersize is without....
Oxygen
18 of 22
Downsides....
Causes muscle fatigue, doesn't release anywhere near enough energy compared to aerobic
19 of 22
Advantages....
You can keep using your muscles for a while longer.
20 of 22
Aerobic respiration leads on to an....
Oxygen debt
21 of 22
What is an oxygen debt?
When you have to repay the oxygen you didn't get to your muscles in time, because yourn lungs, heart, blood couldn't keep up with the demand earlier on.
