what is respiration?
the release of energy
1 of 19
what type of reaction is respiration?
exothermic
2 of 19
where does aerobic respiration occur?
mitochondria
3 of 19
what is the word equation for AEROBIC respiration
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + ATP
4 of 19
why is the mitochondria good for aerobic respiration?
1. has folds -> provde a large SA for respiration. 2. lots in the muscle cells
5 of 19
why do we respire?
1. muscles contract (movement/eating) 2. active transport(movement of molecules from an area of low concentration to high concentration) 3. maintain constant body temp. 4. growth/repair
6 of 19
what happens to your: heart rate, breathing rate and breath deph when you exercise?
They all increase
7 of 19
glucose is needed for respiration. where does this come from?
glycogen -glucagon (hormone) ---> glucose
8 of 19
what is stroke volume?
volume of blood that travels out of the heart each beat
9 of 19
what is anaerobic respiration?
respiration without oxygen
10 of 19
what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
glucose -> lactic acid (+ little ATP)
11 of 19
why is lactic acid produced in anaerobic respiration?
glucose molecules are not broken down completely, so less energy is transferred. This basically happens becuase there is not enough oxygen
12 of 19
what is muscle fatigue?
when your muscles stop contracting efficiently
13 of 19
what is oxygen debt?
after harsh exercise your HR, BR and BD must remain high for a short period of time to increase the amount of oxygen in the body.
14 of 19
in anaerobic respiration, what is the word equation for turning lactic acid back into carbon dioxide and water?
lactic acid + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
15 of 19
what is the word equation for respiration in other organisms?
(yeast) + glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide
16 of 19
what is your metabolism?
the sum of all the chemical reactions that take place within a cell or body
17 of 19
what are some metabolic reactions
1. respiration. 2. photosynthesis. 3. conversion of glucose -> starch
18 of 19
what does the liver do?
1.breaks down worn, red blood cells. 2. stores iron. 3. breaks down products before they reach the kidney. 4. removes toxins
