What is Respiration?
It's the process of releasing energy from glucose. Respiration goes on in every cell in your body.

It acts as the energy source for many cell processes and transports energy to where it is needed in a cell.

Enzymes. This means that the rate of respiration is affected by both temperature and pH.

It is used when you do extreme exercise because your body can't supply enough oxygen to your muscles for aerobic respiration.

Aerobic because anaerobic releases much less energy per glucose molecule than aerobic.

Which type of respiration causes the glucose to only be partically broken down?
Anaerobic respiration.

When is lactic acid produced and what does it do?
It is produced because the glucose is only partically broken down. The lactic acid builds up in the muscles, which gets painful and makes your muscles fatigued.

What is an advantage of using Anaerobic Resipration?
The advantage is that you can keep on using your muscles.

What happens to Anaerobic respiration when you stop exercising?
When you stop exercising you'll have an oxygen debt. You need extra oxygen to break down all the lactic acid thats built up in ypur muscles and to allow aerobic respiration to begin again.

How do you repay the oxygen debt?
You have to keep breathing hard for a while after you stop exercising to repay the debt.

What has to happen to the lactic acid?
It has to be carried to the liver to be broken down so your heart rate has to stay high too.

What can the Respiratory Quotient (RQ) tell?
It can tell you whether someone is repiring aerobically or Anaerobically.

What is the RQ equation?
RQ= Amount of CO2 produced / Amount of o2 used

How do you know what is anaerobic and aerobic respiraton when using the RQ?
RQ is usually between 0.7 and 1 - this means that the person is respiring aerobically. If the RQ value is greater than 1 then the person is short of oxygen and is respiring anaerobically, too
