Research methods

?
Aim
The purpose of an investigation.
1 of 22
Hypothesis
A testable statement. Can be directional or non-directional.
2 of 22
Independent variable
The manipulated variable.
3 of 22
Dependednt variable
The measured variable.
4 of 22
Operationalisation
Clearly defining variables and how they can be measured.
5 of 22
Confounding variable
Nuisance variable associated with the IV.
6 of 22
Extraneous variable
Random nuisance variable.
7 of 22
Demand characteristics
Chnages in partici[ants behaviours as a result of the participants thinking they know the aim of the study.
8 of 22
Investigator effects
The unconcious influence of the researcher.
9 of 22
Standardisation
Ensuring all the participants have the same experience.
10 of 22
Random sampling
participants are assigned a number and picked out of a hat or randomiser to be put into the conditions. No researcher bias, time-consuing, may be unrepresentative.
11 of 22
Systematic sampling
Every nth person. No researcher bias, may be unrepresentative.
12 of 22
Stratified sampling
Refeclects the proportions of the population. No researcher bias, representative, cannot account for all subgroups.
13 of 22
Oppotunity sampling
Whoever is available. Covenient, risk of researcher bias, unrepresentative.
14 of 22
Volunteer sampling
self-selected volunteers. Less time-consuming, attracts a type of person.
15 of 22
Ethical issues
Informed consent, deception, protection from harm, privacy and confidentiality.
16 of 22
Pilot study
Small scale study to identify any issues prior to the full research.
17 of 22
Single-blind
Participants are not aware of the aim.
18 of 22
Double-blind
Neither the participant nor the researcher know the aim of the investigation.
19 of 22
Independent groups
Participants are not matched and do not repeat the conditions. Less economical, no order effects, participant variables not contolled.
20 of 22
Rpeated measures
All participants do all the conditions. Order effects, demand characteristics, no participant variables.
21 of 22
Matched pairs
Similar participants are matched then put into one condition and one into the other. No order effects, cannot match on every characteristic, time-consuming.
