Desribe the sperm cell
Head contains genetic information and enzyme to help penetrate the egg cell membrane. Middle section packed with mitochondria for energy. Glagellum moves sperm to egg
3 of 15
Describe the ovum cell
Much larger than sperm. Chemical around the outside to make impenetrable once sperm cell entered. Contains cytoplasm to support cell division
4 of 15
What is sexual immaturity and puberty
Not being able to reproduce. During their teens, changes happen to boys and girls that lead to sexual maturity
5 of 15
What happens during sexual maturity
Egg and sperm cells mature and bodies of both sexes adapt to allow reproduction to take place

What is the influence of hormones for males
FSH stimulates sperm production. LH instructs the testes to secrete the male sex hormone testosterone. Testosterone controls the male secondary sexual characteristics
7 of 15
What is the influence of hormones for females
Both FSH and LH are responsible for controlling the release of the female sex hormone oestrogen
8 of 15
Male changes at puberty
Sperm production starts. Growth and development of male sexual organs, armpit/pubic/chest/facial hair. Increase in body mass and voice breaks

What does progesterone do during the cycle
Produced by the corpus luteum. Maintains the lining of the uterus in order for it to receive a fertilised egg. Stops FSH and LH. If fertilised progesterone continues but if not it doesn't.

Four stages of sexual reproduction
Gametes are produced. Male gamete is transferred to the female gamete- Fertilisation must occur, the sperm fuses with egg. Zygote formed develops into a new individual.
