rates of reaction

?
what four things does the rate of reaction depend on?
1. Temperature 2. Concentration( or pressure for gases) 3. Catalyst 4. size of particles or surface area
1 of 7
what is an exothermic reaction?
a reaction which gives out energy to its surroundings usually in the form of heat and is shown in the form of a rising temperature. the best e.g's of an exothermic reaction are burning fuels(combustion) & neutralising or oxidation reactions,
2 of 7
what is an endothermic reaction?
a reaction which takes energy in from the surroundings in the form of heat and is shown by a fall in temp. thermal decompositions such as that of CaCO3& hydrated copper sulphate are good eg's of these reactions.
3 of 7
what is a reversible reaction?
where the products of the reaction can themselves react to produce the original reactants. if this reaction takes place in a closed system, equilibrium will be reached. it is in fact a dynamic equilibrium because the reactions are still happening.
4 of 7
what are the three main ways to measure the speed of a reaction?
rate of reaction=amount of reactant used OR amount of product formed / time. 1. precipitation 2. change in mass(usually gas given off and uses a mass balance) 3. the volume of gas given off (involves gas syringe)
5 of 7
what is the collision theory?
more collisions increase the rate of reaction. higher temp increases collisions, so does higher concentration(or pressure) as well as larger surface area and catalysts increase the number or successful collisions.
6 of 7
what is a catalyst and how does it increase the rate of reaction?
it s a substance which changes the speed of a reaction without being changed or used up in the reaction. catalysts lower the activation energy and can use at lower temps, can help reduce costs in industrial reactions.big surface area=most efficient
